Franz West, highly influential Viennese artist, died on Wednesday in Vienna, after a long illness. He was 65. His death was announced by the Franz West Foundation.
Franz West was one of the most innovative and progressive artists of his generation, was known for his sculptures and installations both playful and serious, accessible and yet intellectually challenging. Mr. West’s work ranged from collages to furniture to large, colorful public sculptures. He worked with a wide range of materials, including aluminum, plaster and papier-mâché, as well as crafting furniture. His sculptural sensibilty culminated in the physical engagement of the onlooker with his sculpture making him become part of the work. He considered his small, portable sculptures, which he called "Adaptives," complete only when picked up and carried.
During his career, West has shown in major museums and galleries around the world, as well as repeatedly at documenta in Kassel, the Venice and other Biennales.
Last year, West was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale.
