ARGENTINA. Los Carpinteros at the Faena Arts Center, Buenos Aires
16/05/2012 14:48:45

The newly opened Faena Arts Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina will present a major solo exhibition of work by the collective Los Carpinteros (The Carpenters). The exhibition will focus on central aspects of the atists's oeuvre: the exploration of the relationship between art and society, the complex dynamics between the object and its function, art and the everyday, uselessness and practicality, and autonomy and social meaning. The exhibition will include new large sculptural works and works on paper; it will be on view at the Faena Arts Center from May 17 through August 12, 2012.

The collective Los Carpinteros has consolidated an artistic work that has made them one of the most relevant international figures emerged from Cuba in the last decade of the twenty century. Graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, they formed the collective in 1991. The duo, consisting of Marco Castillo and Dagoberto Rodríguez, adopted their name in 1994, deciding to renounce the notion of individual authorship and refer to an older guild tradition of artisans. Focus on the relationship between art and society, the group mixes design, architecture, urbanism in astonishing and often humorous ways. In their carefully crafted installations, sculptures and watercolors they establish peculiar statements towards the object and its function, art and the everyday, uselessness and practicality, autonomy and social meaning.
